Last week, both Everlane and adidas announced their own unique approach to what sustainable sneakers mean to them. For Everlane their sustainable sneakers launching on April 25th, will be all about virgin plastic (which is plastic that has not been processed or recycled) and full-grain leather (which is a leather that hasn't been sanded or buffed, therefore is more durable) produced at the world’s cleanest tannery, in hopes of creating the the world’s lowest-impact sneakers. Whereas for adidas, their Futurecraft Loop is all about creating a running shoe made made from one single material (meaning that each kick is made from 100% reusable Thermoplastic polyurethane and no glue) that can be taken and recycled in one single process. Both ideas, though different, react towards one common problem in the fashion industry: plastic. However, they aren't the only brands that have been tackling this problem. From cult favorite brands like Veja and Allbirds to more brands you might not heard about but totally should like Nisolo and Matt & Nat, slowly but surely fashion brands are becoming more aware of the role they play in the world's contamination and are looking into how they can make a change starting from the feet up.
